We've known each other so long we can't remember how we met. I know it happened in junior high in an English class (or was it high school?) and that somehow through various same interests we gravitated towards each other. We've endured different hardships over the years, many relationships and some things we experienced at the same time. And somehow, we ended up living in the same city.
Another friend has just returned from another state, where she has been living for the last fifteen years or so. I can't even remember the last time I spoke to her, it's been that long. I was actually afraid that when we met again she would be different, and our initial meeting would be awkward and that we wouldn't have much to say to each other. I was afraid she had become another person, one I could no longer just say anything to. We would, I feared, conclude to ourselves after saying "Let's get together again soon"that we probably wouldn't. But this didn't happen. She was still the same person who made me laugh with her peculiar outlook on life, and though she'd had some life-changing experiences she had remained herself, but I think in a good way.
These two people define friendship. Though you're far away, you still stay close. There is some part of you that stays linked to another in a way that is never degraded by the passing of time. And even though you don't see each other much, the moment you cross paths again it seems like you've never left each other's company after all. You know those people - and if they're like my friends, they'll always be around. Or they will when they get around to it, and that will be just fine.
